Fall in the Texas Hill Country
Underline

Those of you who can't get away, enjoy the beauty of fall through my photos, and those who can - take Highway 337 from Vanderpoole or Bandera and over the ridge into Leakey. These images, for the most part, are accessible by road. My suggestion is to scout locations for the best color areas during midday then return late afternoon or first thing in the morning to photograph with the warmer, more textural light. There are Spanish Oaks resplendent in red and yellow-leaved Silver Maples dot the hillside, casting glimmering reflections in the Sabinal. The sparkling clarity of the Medina lined with Cypress and the subtle nuances of the flowing Frio all are alive with color. The golden hues of late afternoon sun on the Cypress along the rocky banks of the Frio create a sinuous trail of gold in the color of fall. We were invited to photograph along private waters of the Rio Frio where the original Pearl Beer ads were filmed in the land of 1,100 springs. Even with a current drought, the waterfalls there have a soft and enchanting sound and provided musical accompainment as I settled in to photograph water rushing over stone and fall colors blending magically with the river. If you decide to go on a road trip such as this one, you will work up an appetite. Outside of Leakey, Just Barbeque may just have the best barbeque ribs in the state of Texas. Sadly they are closed for winter now, but they will be back this Spring requiring another trip to God's Country! Until then, for those of you that are thinking clearly and are heading that direction now, absolutely the best chicken fried steak you will most likely ever eat can be found in Leakey, at the Feed lot! The Feed Lot is featured in this month's issue of Texas Monthly's top 40 Road restaurants in Texas! This isn't just another chicken fried steak, not by a long shot, this takes CFS to a different level featuring hand tenderized ribeye steak as the main ingredient.
